Paper cuttings
Paper cuttings with New Year celebration symbols on doors and windows are very much part of the Spring Festival.
The Chinese character "fu", meaning "good fortune," is hung upside down to catch good luck. Since the year of the dog is on its way, paper cuttings in the shape of dogs are popular.
Paper cuttings can be found Section B on the first floor of the Art Crafts Exhibition Center. They are also available at Jin Baili Handiwork Center near Rainbow Department Store in Dongmen business district. The traditional red paper cuttings cost less than 100 yuan.
God of Wealth and dancing lion
The God of Wealth, according to Chinese custom, comes on lunar New Year's Eve, and Chinese families are getting ready to welcome him.
More elaborate God of Wealth decorations are appearing this year on Chaohuahang New Year Decorations Street near Rainbow Department Store in Dongmen shopping center. An electrically operated and inflatable God of Wealth is making his debut this year, two-meters high and selling for 300 yuan. If this pricey God of Wealth succeeds in attracting good fortune, it's worth the investment.
Dancing lion decorations are giving the God of Wealth a run for his money on Chaohuahang Street. One 50-centimeter long dancing lion is eating romaine ("shengcai"), which sounds like "make fortune" in Cantonese. The vivacious, colorful lions each costs 50 yuan.
