As many as nine Nepali women have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005 for their contribution to peace-building, an official disclosed in Kathmandu Wednesday (June 29th).
The nine Nepali women are part of a unique nominations consisting of 1,000 women worldwide, who have been collectively nominated for the prestigious award, said Kamla Bhasin, one of the 20 coordinators of women for the prize selection committee representing South Asia.
These women, from rural and grass root levels, have been promoting non-violent responses to conflict situations, structural injustices and inequalities, Bhasin told a press meeting held in Kathmandu.
The names of the nominees including the nine Nepali women will be made public at a press meeting in their respective countries later, Bhasin added.
During 2004, candidates for the nomination were sought from allover the world with the help of 20 coordinators. More than 2,000 women from 153 countries had been nominated last year.
