The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization has recognized the restoration work of two historic streets in Zhangzhou, China's Southeastern Fujian Province.
At a ceremony held in the city's Zhangzhou hotel on Sunday, the UN praised the city's successful work in preserving two streets that contain 400-year-old stone archways, a temple and historic buildings.
The UNESCO protection award is aimed at motivating individuals and organizations to protect ancient structures.
The project was awarded a Honourable Mention in the 2004 annual UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards program.
