A special exhibition that features 150 representative works by Chinese cartoonist Hua Junwu opened in Shenzhen Art Museum on Tuesday, and will run until March 29.
The works on display cover the cartoonist's 75-year art career from the 1930s to the present day, and will include some works that have never before been published. The works will subsequently become part of the museum's permanent collection, after being donated by Hua.
Hua, one of China's leading contemporary cartoonists, is well-known for creating contemporary cartoons that combine penetrating insight with a sharp sensibility. His unique works spring from astute observations on life, a quick wit and excellent drawing skills. A perfect blend of drawing and poetry, Hua's works also reveal a finely developed sense of humor.
Such is the charm of Hua's cartoons, that although they consist of only a few pen strokes they are able to convey rich meaning, and he manages to vividly depict the inner qualities of the characters that he draws.
The cartoon captions that Hua writes depart from the rhyming schemes of traditional Chinese poems, and are rife with sarcasm and wit.
Hua held a one-man art exhibition at the Shenzhen Art Museum in 1991.
