Temple fair to greet festival
Latest Updated by 2005-01-27 09:05:19

More than 50 traditional crafts will be on show at a temple fair in Shenzhen in February.

The temple fair will be held at Shenzhen Children's Palace in Futian District between Feb. 6 and Feb. 15 as part of Spring Festival celebrations.

A spokesperson for the organizing committee said it would be the biggest temple fair in the city's history.

During the fair, traditional and rare crafts will be displayed such as a peep show, sugar dolls, Sichuan Opera rapid face changes, a puppet show from the Tang Dynasty (618-907), modeling clay and wood figures, and acrobatics.

Visitors can learn crafts for free at the fair, and make their own block-print New Year pictures, clay figures and kites, and play puppet shows.

Larger activities will be staged outside the children's palace, with a traditional snack street, car exhibition, bar street, flower market, children's park, teahouses and shops selling special goods for the Spring Festival.

Temple fairs have been traditional public events in China around festival holidays for centuries.

The fairs used to be religious ceremonies to offer sacrifices, but now have developed into modern festivals with fun-filled celebrations and entertainment.

There is usually a bustling, festive atmosphere at temple fairs, which feature a host of folk art traditions.
