The Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra will perform Shostakovich's "Violin Concerto No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 77" and "Symphony No. 10 in E Minor, Op. 93." German conductor Christian Ehwald will wield the baton and violinist Antje Weithaas will be soloist.

It is hardly possible to imagine a better advocate of music than Weithaas. The art of the music itself and its communication are always her main focus. Today, she is one of the most sought-after soloists and chamber musicians of her generation. Her wide range of repertoire includes the great concertos by Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann and modern classics by Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Ligeti and Gubaidulina, but also rarities such as the violin concertos by Korngold, Hartmann and Schoeck.

In content and structure "Symphony No. 10" is perhaps the finest example of Shostakovich's ingenious synthesis of allusions to the symphonic tradition on the one hand and, on the other hand, encoded references to his own particular time and place. It has four movements. The first and longest is a slow movement in rough sonata form. The second is a fast scherzo with syncopated rhythms and endlessly furious semiquaver passages. Third is a moderate dance-like suite of Mahlerian "Nachtmusik" or "Nocturne," which is what Shostakovich called it. The final is a slow andante (again heavily influenced by Mahler) that suddenly changes into a fast finale that has the pace of a doom-laden Gopak.
