Central China's Henan Province is renowned as the "home of opera", with over 60 local opera genres. But according to new research, most of them are in the danger of extinction.
The Henan Daily reports that 300 students from Henan University are doing systematic research into the origins and current situation of different local opera genres. They found out half of the 65 kinds of local opera are dying out.
Under the influence of modern media, many traditional operas have gradually lost their audiences. These arts are traditionally handed down between generations but nowadays it is difficult to attract interest from the younger generation.
