For over one and a half century, countless French soldiers, diplomats, missionaries, artists and humble travelers have attempted to transmit their fascination of China and its inhabitants using the medium of photography.

Such a narrative, mixing famous examples with lesser known ones, is what inspired this exhibition to come to fruition.

What China was like at the age of exploration, how China was described by the first diplomats to have taken up their posts here, what did travelers thought about China at that time, and what China was like in the past and in contemporary times: all of the many facets of China reveal themselves in this exhibition that will appeal as much to Chinese audiences as it will to Western audiences.

The show will start off with the pictures regarded as the first having been taken in China a mere ten years after the invention of the picture-taking machine by Mr. Daguerre. It will proceed further in time, putting special emphasis on exceptional prints hailing from the most prestigious photographic collections of France.
