“Writers can paint” is a tradition in Chinese intellectual circles. Liao Huaqiang is such a writer. He graduated from Guangzhou Art Academy and never dropped his brush ever since. However, his achievements in writing outshone his other talents in the past decades.

Chinese painting is a technically demanding art. Practice makes perfect. Piles of lotus and bird paintings in the past decades won Liao skills and inspiration to produce landscape masterpieces in recent years.

He painted not only the popular topics, such as waterfall, birds in mountains, clouds and sun in fall, but also the famous mountains and polar regions. It is hard to define him as a Lingnan Painting School painter.

However, style and genre are not that important nowadays. Personality and intellectual weight count. Liao excelled in taking advantage of different skills to produce panorama paintings. In his painting, the cloud, mountains and water have souls and can tell stories. Such is an excellent writer’s painting.
