A scene from "Rhinoceros in Love."

The long-lasting and acclaimed Chinese drama "Rhinoceros in Love" will be staged at Shenzhen Poly Theater in February.

The drama tells of a simple love affair. A man falls in love with a woman and does everything he can for her. The main character, Ma Lu, is a paranoiac who often overstates the difference between women. To pursue his love, he has done lots of things which seem impossible and illogical. However, without stubbornness, there would be no pioneering, new boundaries or new starts.

Lots of audiences are so fascinated with the drama that they go to the theater repeatedly. To some extent, this may be accredited to the classical lines in the drama, such as "You're my warm gloves, cool beer, shirt with a smell of sunshine, and dreams day after day" and "Why do you call yourself a rhinoceros? Because the rhinoceros has poor eyesight" — which implies that people usually become blind when in love.

The comedy is directed by Meng Jinghui, one of the most influential directors of experimental drama in China. He is currently director of the National Theater of China. With unique creativity, he is a pioneer of contemporary drama. "Two Dogs' Opinions on Urban Life," "An Accidental Death of an Anarchist," "A Hundred Years of Solitude," "Bedbug" and "Love of Three Oranges" are his representative works.

Since 1999, "Rhinoceros in Love" has attracted wide attention in dramatic circles at home and abroad. It has been called "A Love Bible Forever." Besides being performed at theaters, it has been staged more than 1,000 times in about 200 universities or colleges, becoming the most staged drama on campuses around the country.
