The definition of "guanxi" has adjusted to keep pace with the rapid development of Chinese society, popularization of internet and the information explosion. The two common translations—"connections" and "relationships" — do not sufficiently reflect the wide cultural implications and subtle meanings which guanxi describes.
"In China, guanxi is a complex term reflecting mutual restraint between individuals; a connection established through social and political communications, in which one is able to prevail upon another to perform a favor or service; and the cultural content which was accumulated through history and development of China", said Jiang Jiehong, planner of this exhibition. As a result, the pinyin romanization of this Chinese word "guanxi" is becoming more widely acknowledged as a unique phrase rooted and developed in Chinese society.
Twelve artists exhibit their works separately. In multi-dimensions, the artists present their understanding of "guanxi", as to what they have heard, seen, felt or have experienced, through different artistic forms such as installation, pictures, sculpture, painting and simulate dialogue. Active interaction between the planner and the artists is achieved by the seminar and exhibition of this open topic.
