Straw dragon dance performances.

A traditional straw dragon dance with more than 300 years of history in Nan'ao, Longgang District, will be held Feb. 15, the second day of the Spring Festival, in Nanyu Community in Nan'ao Subdistrict.

With the aim of protecting fishermen from tornados on the sea, fishermen from nearby fishing villages perform the dragon dance made from a kind of grass called Jiancao and set it alight before sending it out to sea to pray for the safety of fishermen.

At 3 p.m., villagers will make the dragon with hay cut in the morning and the dragon dance starts at 7 p.m. in front of the Tin Hau Temple with more than 100 fishermen dressed in yellow clothes.

After lighting joss sticks on the dragon, a ceremony to light up its eyes will be performed by an old villager with a high reputation and all the other villagers will welcome the dragon coming to life.

At about 8:30 p.m., the dance team moves to Moon Bay Harbor to send the dragon back to the sea. Villagers then pray by the fire for a year of safety at sea.
