[Shenzhen] Liao Changyong to grace concert hall (Nov 20)

A highly regarded pupil of maestro Domingo, Liao Changyong is one of the best baritones in China. He is going to bring some of his best repertoire to the audience in Shenzhen in collaboration with the Macao Orchestra next week.

The program will include Tchaikovsky's "Piano Concerto No.1 in B-Flat Minor," numbers from the operas of Rossini, Bizet and Gounod, as well as Chinese artistic and folk songs.

Liao, 41, graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Between 1996 and 1997 he won first prize at the 41st French International Toulouse Singing Competition, the Placido Domingo World Opera Competition and the Queen Sonja International Music Competition in Norway.

The concert will be conducted by Lu Jia, principal conductor of the Macao Orchestra. Lu won the first prize and the Judges' Prize of the Antonio Pedrotti International Conducting Competition in Trento, Italy in 1989. He was also the first Chinese conductor ever to lead the Chicago

Symphony Orchestra and to record the complete works of German composer Felix Mendelssohn. Also performing will be pianist Vladimir Feltsman, Grand Prix winner of the 1971 Marguerite Long International Piano Competition in Paris.
