China’s comic strips to amaze Belgium

From Feb. 13 to Sept. 9, a half-month long exhibition titled ‘A Panorama of Chinese Comic Strips: connected images from abroad’ will be held at the Belgian Comics Art Museum, Brussels, Belgium.

Over 150 Chinese classic comic works created in different historical periods will be displayed at the exhibition, including Chinese cartoon and comic strip classics, representative works of young cartoon artists, animations and so on. Shown in the forms of cartoon images, valuable cartoon literatures and classical cartoon films, the exhibition is going to present a diversified and interesting experience for its viewers.

The exhibition consists of five sectors, namely ‘Cartoon History’, ‘Cultural Inheritance’, ‘Images of Reformation’ and ‘Chinese Humor’. Together theses five academic and cultural sectors will illustrate Chinese achievements in cartoon of the 20th century and convey Chinese cultural characteristics and spirits to European viewers.

In mid January, once the poster of the exhibition was released on the official website of the Belgian Comics Art Museum, it immediately aroused the interest of numerous cartoon lovers and local Chinese. Many people have booked tickets for the exhibition in advance. According to Mr. Zhao, a Chinese citizen residing in Belgium for years, the local Chinese are extremely excited about the upcoming exhibition, and his family and friends will attend the opening ceremony to celebrate the Spring Festival.

This is the first time that Chinese comics are systematically and comprehensively presented in Europe for the longest time. European tourists can learn about Chinese well-known cartoons and world-renowned Chinese cartoonists from this exhibition.

Jin Cheng, curator consultant and participating artist of the exhibition, revealed that the preparations of the exhibition started four years ago, and Guangdong’s JC Cartoon Art Museum provided many original works of classic cartoons, sculptures and installations for the exhibition.

Luo Yiping, former director of Guangdong Museum of Art and curator of the exhibition, said the exhibition not only reflects the real life of Chinese people in the 20th century, but also shows distinctive Chinese cultural features in aesthetic style. He believes that this exhibition will deepen the friendship and mutual understanding between people of China and Belgium as well as promote the cultural exchange between two countries.

The exhibition is supported by the Chinese Ministry of Culture, and co-hosted by National Art Museum of China, China Arts and Entertainment Group and the Belgian Comics Art Museum.
