Henglan town in Zhongshan City, recently installed 250 solar street lamps on Henglan road. The five kilometer road is the longest in the country to use solar street lights.
Street lamps that use solar energy are expected to cut annual electricity consumption by 250,000 kilowatt-hours, worth around 180,000 yuan (20,000US). China stated in its 11th five-year plan that energy-saving is a basic national policy.
The plan aims to reduce energy consumption per unit GDP by 20% in 2010 compared with 2005. Per unit of GDP energy consumption in 2006 is expected to drop 4%.
