The first phase of the expansion, one of the three key culture infrastructure projects in Guangdong's 11th Five-Year Program, will be finished by 2007 and the whole project will be finished by 2010.
The expansion project, involving an investment of 500 million yuan (US$62.5 million), will cover an area of 68,000 square meters with a floor space of 100,599 square meters.
After the completion of the first phase, the library will have a collection of 8 million books. It will have 4,000 seats to accommodate 15,000 visitors daily.
An 8,000-square-meter storeroom for classic, old and precious books will be built to preserve old books from different dynasties.
