Zhongshan, a city of Guangdong province, balances economic development with environment protection and keeps the title "Model City for Environment Protection" since 1998. Now it is ready for the re-inspection of the State Environment Protection Administration.

The city ranks top of Guangdong province in water, air and sound environment, in which the government has put a great effort.

Water

A large-scale project, including sewerage factory & sewerage system construction, a Dong River water conservancy project and Qijiang River water realignment, has been carried out. Qijiang River have much improved and became a new tourist resort of the city.

Others

Zhongshan have launched 5 environment protection infrastructure key projects to get rid of sewage and garbage. About 94.2% of the city's key enterprises reach the industrial pollution effluent standard at the end of last year.
The pollution of the tail-gas has been relieved because of the city government's rigid supervision on the car ejection and on the quality of bus and oil since 2001.

Besides, Zhongshan has passed the inspection of national ecological city, and the city government started the project of building the city into an ecological city this year, in a bid to ensure the harmony of social development and environment protection.
