Travelers entering the mainland through Shenzhen checkpoints will be required to have all luggage gone through X-ray scans for security concerns.
This is one of the tightening measures taken by authorities to guarantee the security of the Olympic Games which open in Beijing on Aug. 8.
The system has been in use at Luohu Checkpoint since late May and checks have been strengthened at all other Shenzhen checkpoints.
The city's quarantine authority would also work with its Hong Kong counterpart monitoring the import of poultry and other fresh produce to the SAR where Olympic equestrian events would be held, yesterday's Southern Metropolis Daily said.
During the Games period from Aug. 8 to 23, authorities will also strengthen inspections of parcels. Those with oil stains, containing bio-products and poisonous liquids will be the focus of the inspections.
Parcels from institutions and companies that engage in nuclear or related business activities, bio-laboratories and research institutions, radioactive medical treatment institutions and parcels containing white-powdered material, having an irritating smell or labeled with signs of radioactivity and poisons will be subject to the strictest inspection.
The quarantine authority had also adopted contingency plans for nuclear and biochemical attacks and devised an anti-terrorist strategy but the newspaper did not elaborate.
Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint recently conducted a joint drill with Hong Kong health authorities to handle emergencies such as an outbreak of bird flu or other medical emergency.
