Shenzhen submits Universiade bid
Latest Updated by 2006-06-30 09:13:58

TOP Guangdong and Shenzhen officials submitted Shenzhen's application to host the 26th Universiade to the International University Sports Federation (FISU) in Brussels, Belgium, on Wednesday (June 28).

The city has chosen "Shenzhen embraces the world" as the slogan for its bid, an official news release said Thursday.

Xu Deli, vice chairman of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the CPPCC, Shenzhen Vice Mayor Liang Daoxing, handed in the bid documents to the FISU secretariat.

The bid report, written in Chinese, English, French and Spanish, introduced Shenzhen's overall plans for the games as well as reasons why the city was the best choice for holding such an event.

The city has pledged to build 12 new stadiums and gyms in Futian, Nanshan and Luohu districts for the games, which will be held in 2011.

FISU Secretary General Roch Campana said Shenzhen's proposal was the best among those he had read in terms of content. Judging from the efforts the city made in compiling the proposal, the city would be capable of hosting a successful Unversiade, he added.

Edmonton in Canada, Poznan in Poland, Kazan in Russia, Murcia in Spain, and also Kaohsiung in China's Taiwan Province were the other cities to submit applications for the event by Wednesday.

The FISU will make an inspection tour of the bidding cities during October and November this year.

Shenzhen Mayor Xu Zongheng will make a presentation for the city's bid in Turin, Italy, on July 1, 2007, when the winning city to host the 26th Universiade will be announced.

Shenzhen received the State Council's go-ahead to bid for the 26th Universiade on Dec. 17 last year. If successful, the city will become the second Chinese city to host the games after Beijing, which hosted the 21st Universiade in 2001.
