Shenzhen is planning to spend 900 million yuan (US$109 million) to build a dam on the Dongjiang River to improve the city's water supply.
A dam on the river in Huizhou City would improve supply to Shenzhen during the dry season.
The dam would store about 100,000 cubic meters of water. This would also reduce pumping costs because of the rise in the water level. The dam project, part of a provincial network being planned, would also help generate 250 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a year.
At a provincial meeting on Dongjiang River water resources in Shenzhen on Friday, Guangdong Vice Governor Li Ronggen and Zhou Rifang, vice chief of the provincial water resources department, agreed with Shenzhen's proposal in principle, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.
In the grip of a long drought and with next wet season still six months away, cities in the Dongjiang River valley were urged to save water, scientifically deploy the resources and reduce water pollution.
