Mixing education with pleasure
Latest Updated by 2004-06-16 16:27:30

Douglasd Tobin and Maggie Hu are looking forward to a new life and new business in Shenzhen.

Tobin, 47, an Australian, could not hide his excitement when talking about Shenzhen.

The couple met in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, at a telephone matchmaking coffee shop where all the tables have a phone with the number displayed above.

A phone conversation led to a dramatic change in the lives of these two people. “I loved her at first sight,” said Tobin.

The couple came to Shenzhen last year and set their sights on a special education project aimed at preparing Chinese students for studying abroad.

“We will set up a real Chinese-style community in Perth in Australia with qualified high school and university tutors as well as an Internet telephone network. There they will not feel lonely or left out,” said Hu.

Tobin once taught media and developmental psychology in Australian universities, while Hu made a name for herself in Chengdu with her interactive English teaching style.

They are now going to combine their efforts to paint a new picture of overseas education for Chinese students.

“Remember what Einstein said. ‘Knowledge is power but imagination is more important.’ It’s time for Chinese students to become more imaginative,” Tobin said.
