Zhanjiang port handled 80.96 million tons of goods in year 2006, 15 million tons or 23% up from last year, according to a Zhanjiang government's press conference held yesterday (Dec. 29).
Guangdong province and the city government has spent years on developing the local seaport economy. Several infrastructure projects have been completed in recent years, including three major ones - the 250,000-ton deepwater harbour project, the 300,000-ton oil terminal project and the 200,000-ton iron ore port project.
And the city has initiated a strategy of building a modern and digitalized deepwater port, and in the same time, develop local industries and warehouses.
Zhanjiang is striving to become a large and modern international seaport. It is expected that Zhanjiang port's cargo throughput will exceed 100 million ton by 2008, and 42 new berths with 135 million-ton cargo handling capacity will be added by year 2010, making it a leading port h ub in South China.
