Two people drowned after a boat sank Tuesday near Daya Bay in Guangdong Province, the Yangcheng Evening News reported Friday.
The two victims were a 6-year-old girl and a woman aged 37.
Twenty-four people from Huizhou boarded two boats at about 7 p.m. Tuesday. One of the boats, carrying 17 people, sank because of strong winds and waves. All the people on board, aged between two and a half years and 70, fell into the water.
Officers from the nearby police station rushed to the site for rescue operations.
When they arrived at the site where the boat had sunk, they found all the passengers in the water. Some stood on the top of the sunken boat, and some floated in the sea, clinging to wooden boards. The passengers were rescued and sent to hospital for medical checkups.
Two died in hospital, while two others were still hospitalized.
The boat had reportedly been rented illegally.
