Crowded Guangzhou on Car-free Day
Latest Updated at 2009-September-24 12:51:58

Citizens could rent a bike from 7 to 19 o'clock in a day for free during the Car-free Day in Guangzhou. (

Together with other 133 cities in China, Guangzhou took part in World Car-free Day on Tuesday (Sep 22)聽by advocating private car owners not to drive. During this eco-friendly day, however, the number of private cars decreased while the traffic condition in some parts of Guangzhou didn't see any improvement.

Public vehicles: more crowded than usual

"It's my first time this year to take a bus. So crowded!" said Xiao Liu, a "white-collar" woman who went to work by bus instead of car. Most buses were more crowded than usual during rush hour.

Riding bikes: not a smart idea

With 300 RMB (43.94 USD) cash deposit, citizens could rent a bike from 7 to 19 o'clock in a day for free. 50 bikes were available at the Gong Yuanq Qian and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall metro stations. However, by half past 16 o'clock on that day, only 29 of them were occupied. Most of citizens said riding a bike in downtown Guangzhou was not a smart idea.

Taxi: busy for on-call service

"Sorry. I'm on call now and cannot take you." A taxi driver refused a client at 7 o'clock in the morning of the Car-free Day on Dongfeng Dong Road. Taxi clients were double during the car free day. Some big taxi companies sent all their drivers to hit the road with an on-call taxi service, but were so busy that pedestrians could not hail a taxi without booking in advance.

Most of citizens agree that having a car-free day is a good idea. Some suggested that there should be one car-free day per season and hope it could raise people's interest in protecting the environment.
