Guangzhou police had closed 41 porn Web sites and detained 11 suspects during the past two weeks, the Nanfang Daily reported Monday (Aug. 9).
Local authorities had adopted hard-line tactics toward the online porn business, and any Web server hosting a porn site would be immediately shut down once traced, a public security bureau spokesman said.
The action was part of a national campaign against Web pornography and had been aided by authorities of other cities, he said.
In mid July, Guangzhou police located a Web server hosting a porn site in the city, but after querying the server provider, they found that the site operators were residents in Foshan and Nanhai cities.
Police were contacted in both cities and the suspects were immediately detained, the spokesman said.
That Web site offered porn videos with a monthly fee of 30 yuan (US$3.6) and had lured more than 100 viewers per day, more than 70 percent of them under the age of 30, he said.
According to police reports, some Web sites sell porn books and video compact discs, and even charge "subscription fees."
"Our 'cyber cops' will continue their mission to stop these illegal activities, safeguarding public interests and people's property," the spokesman said.
