The west district, located on the west of urban district of Zhongshan city and on the bank of qijiang river, covers the area of 27.1sq.km among which there are total cultivated land with area of 7773.2mu. It governs six resident committees in countryside and 9 resident committees in the city with permanent resident about 30,000 and people from outside about 40,000. In 1999,GDDof the district numbered 407 million yuan, gross product of industry 13.0534 million yuan and tax revenue 103.52 million yuan Average income of worker in city amount to 11,474 yuan and farmer 4462yuan.
The west district, founded on March 1st, 1984, was combined with original Shalang town through organization reform carried out on August. 25th, 1999. It is continuing to be called Zhongshan city government West district office. |

Concerning over the differences between two section, one system of 'one district two policy' are formed. It means that former west district practices the policy applicable to city while former Shalang practices the policy suitable for town and countryside (part of them are more preferential than in city). It caused characterized economy. Industry and agriculture concentrate on section of Shalang because its vast land, many breeding bases and rich rice-field are best conditions or stimulant to drive industry, breeding and planting forward, west district gives the first place to commerce and trade. Individual whole tale market, tourist hotel, transportation, dietary, estate market, culture and entertainment, finance and bond etc are densely covered the west district is entitled with 'busy capital'.
