The 2006 FIFA World Cup concluded last night (July 9th) after bringing an enormous upsurge to Guangzhou's retail sales over the past month.
Guangzhou's large malls and department stores Grandbuy, Friendship Store, Xindaxin and Teem Plaza, sold World Cup related merchandise worth nearly 500 million yuan ($ 62.5 million US) during the tournament.
Sales increased over 20% compared with the same period, last year. The sales increase was mainly in sporting goods, electronic appliances and wines. Guangzhou Wine Association Secretary-General surnamed Xia yesterday said that Guangzhou's wine sales increased 30%, soaring to 1.5 billion Yuan.
