Lately, Mr. Hu Chusheng, Secretary General of the 93rd session of CECF and Chairman of the China Foreign Trade Centre, was interviewed by journalists and gave a preview on the preparation of the 93rd session of CECF.
According to Mr. Hu, the 93rd session of CECF will definitely be held as traditionally scheduled on April 15th and relevant preparation is being conducted orderly and smoothly as planned. Thanks to the reform of arranging the CECF in two phases as of Spring 2002, the CECF has obtained a breakthrough on its exhibition scale. Since then, the hosts and organizer have dedicated their efforts all through in strengthening its international competitiveness and upgrading its overall conducting level. The 93rd session of the CECF will present the following two highlights:
Firstly, setting up a specially designed International Procurement Area. The CECF has invited multinational purchasing groups including THE HOME DEPOT, AUCHAN and CENTRAL PURCHASING INC. to join this Fixed Procurement Project in the CECF complex from April 15th to 20th. The project will facilitate a more convenient and effective business exchange between international buyers and Chinese exhibitors. Meanwhile, the CECF website set a special column for buyers and exhibitors to release their information and make negotiation appointments. This measure is expected to further expand the exhibitors' channels of global sales and to improve trade and transaction function of the CECF.
Secondly, upgrading the level and function of the E-commerce of the CECF's website. More language versions, including Japanese, German and French are currently available at the website. Web servers with advanced capacity and 100M internet outlets are newly introduced to guarantee fast accessing speed at peak periods. The website contents on exhibiting enterprises and merchandises, overseas buyers and sourcing lists, as well as various service information are largely expanded. The application of E-commerce has been further popularized. The on-line CECF is established to provide E-commerce services for exhibitors and overseas buyers to conduct on-line negotiation and trade matching, which synchronizes the trade fair, through the exclusive official website of the CECF www.cantonfair.org.cn . Taking these measures the CECF is able to supplement the traditional transactions with the distinctive E-commerce.
As to whether the ongoing Iraqi war and atypical pneumonia will affect the upcoming CECF, which is of great concern to many journalists, Mr. Hu Chusheng said, due to limited awareness of the actual situation in China, some foreign friends are still troubled by reports from overseas media and probably the above two factors might discourage a small number of buyers from attending the fair. The central committee of the CPC and the State Council are very concerned about it and have paid close attention to this epidemic. Instructions have been given many times to take effective measures to control the spread of the disease. A steering committee chaired by the Minister of Health has been established to guide the prevention and control of atypical pneumonia. The Ministry of Health (MOH) has also paid close attention to the outbreak in Guangdong. Three ministerial visits were paid to the province to guide the work. Three national expert teams were sent there to work with local experts. "Notice to Strengthen the Control of Respiratory Diseases in Spring" was issued by the MOH to all local health administrative departments. Thematic meetings were held to organize the work and active surveillance and prevention were conducted. CPC Guangdong Committee and Guangdong Provincial Government summoned all medical service capacities to save lives and ensures that each and every patient is treated timely and appropriately. A large amount of epidemiological study, clinical diagnosis, field investigation and sampling, laboratory testing, sterilization and isolation work have also been carried out and rich experience been accumulated. After painstaking efforts by the central and local health workers, the number of new cases has declined and recoveries have increased. The epidemic has been put under control. People live and work normally. Society is stable and travel is safe.
Mr. Hu Chusheng also added that 12 domestic and international exhibitions were held at the CECF fair complex in March 2003, with the total exhibition area of 170,000 square meters and 370,000 visitors. Instead of being affected by SARS, these exhibitions maintained a momentum of rapid development. In addition, PRC Ministry of Commerce, the Government of Guangdong Province and Guangzhou City have adopted a series of preventive measures to assure the health and safety of the visitors and exhibitors of the 93rd session of CECF. At present, experts from WHO are in Guangdong Province for inspection. I believe that the WHO experts will soon make accurate judgments and advices on the actual situation in Guangdong Province, and the 93rd Session of the CECF will achieve a complete success as before.
