Wireless charging, unmanned driving, and other cutting-edge technologies will be produced in Zhuhai beginning in June next year, it was announced at the 2017 ZTE Forum for Cooperation of Enterprises, Academies & Research on March 16.

This year’s forum in Zhuhai featured a seminar on intelligent vehicle technology, the result of the close cooperation between the city government and Chinese telecoms equipment giant ZTE Corp in promoting the intelligent vehicle industry.

ZTE merged with Zhuhai Guangtong Bus Corp in July 2016, with the new company -- ZTE Smart Auto Corp -- registered in Zhuhai. Today, the ZTE Smart Car Manufacturing Base and 80-hectare headquarters is being built in Jinwan District, a project worth an estimated 14.7 billion yuan ($2.13 billion). The first phase of 48.8 hectares is located south of Dingjia Bay.

When the first-phase is completed, turnover will be 10,000 personal and 20,000 commercial new-energy vehicles, said Tian Feng, vice president of ZTE Smart Auto Corp and ZTE New Energy Vehicle Corp.

ZTE also plans to establish a first-class R&D center for new-energy vehicles, which will focus on automotive telematics, vehicle electronics, and chips.

Early in 2014, ZTE introduced wireless charging technology for new-energy vehicles into the international market and is now trying to industrialize this technology in Zhuhai. The company is also anxious to push forward the industrialization of self-drive vehicles.

In the future, ZTE intends to create and improve a smart transportation system. In December 2016, ZTE Smart Auto and ZTE New Energy Vehicle together won the contract for a public transportation program in western Shenzhen, for which they provided 204 electronic buses and intelligent charging facilities.

“Interacting with the local government, universities, and enterprises, we are trying to help form an intelligent vehicle industry cluster in Zhuhai and advocate a healthy industrial ecology,” said Tian.

Established in 1985, ZTE is a world-leading integrated communication solution provider with 107 branches globally and clients from telecom operators and enterprise network in 164 countries and regions. Its emerging services in chips, government enterprises, Internet of Things, Internet of Vehicles, cloud computing, big data, and bid video have shone strong growth tendencies in recent years.
