Guangdong provincial government has been working hard on abolishing toll-gate charging system on highways for years. Number of toll gates in the provinces dwindled rapidly last year with a total of 42 toll gates shut down. According to the officials, another 42 toll gates have been closed in the first six month of this year, and the toll-gate system as a whole in the Pearl River Delta is expected to be replaced by annual-pass system before the end of this year.
According to government sources, Guangzhou, Zhuhai had adopted completely the annual-pass charging system in 2001; Shenzhen, Foshan, Zhongshan have abolished most of their toll gates on highways by now; Meizhou, Zhanjiang, Yangjiang, Shantou and Maoming have submitted their specific plans for the new charging system respectively, and are now waiting for approvals of provincial government.
